A few years ago I wrote a blog post. I recently checked and that blog post has made me $5,021.53. Not only that but this article and others have added dozens of “A Tier” subscribers to my list. At one point, it was in the top 10 of organic search results for its term. And it’s still in my top 10 pages that bring the most organic traffic to my website.
The title of the post is “Review: Secret Email System by Matt Bacak”. So you can kind of tell where this lesson is going. It isn’t a one-off, either. I’ve repeated this with other posts.
- Review: Confessions of a Persuasion Hitman by Ian Stanley
- BerserkerMail review: After 101,895 emails sent here’s my honest and unfiltered opinion
- The 13th best copywriter in the world
I call this type of blog post a “Traffic Siphon”. This strategy is so effective at generating qualified traffic and adding premium subscribers to your list I’m kicking myself for not using it more often.
All you have to do is write about the “celebrities” in your niche and optimize your article for their name. If you do it right, your article will rank on search engines, often on the first page. People who search for the celebrity’s name will find your article and click on it. Then, you sell them the celebrity’s products and offer them exclusive bonuses for buying using your affiliate link. OR you can offer a lead magnet in exchange for their email address. OR you can do both.
And it works for tools too. Are there common apps used by your market? Do you want to target the users of a specific app? Write reviews of these apps. Create resources for their users.
For example, if you’re an email marketer you can write reviews for products of Ben Settle, Daniel Throssell, Zarak, Chase Dimond and others. You can review ESPs like BerserkerMail, Bento, Campaign Refinery and others.
Here’s the simple structure of a Traffic Siphon if you only want to grow your list:
- Review the product
- Optimize your article for “review” search terms
- Offer a lead magnet related to the search term
Here’s what your Traffic Siphon will look like if you’re an affiliate:
- Review the product
- Optimize your article for “review” search terms
- Offer a stack of bonuses to people who buy using your affiliate link
- Put an opt-in form on the page and capture their email before sending them to the product sales page
- [Optional but recommended] Offer an “instant access” bonus for giving you their email address
Once you have their email address you can send them follow-up emails to promote your own or affiliate products.
The best part is you only have to do this once. And you have a piece of digital real estate generating passive income for as long as the article is live. There’s also a way to maximize your income from one of these posts. That’s what I’m covering in your bonus lesson “[7LBL] Bonus tip 7: Affiliate list building case study”.
